What is the NEST Program?
The Neighborhood Ecological Stewardship Training (NEST) Program is an award-winning exciting opportunity for residents to learn about local natural resources and to explore our nest. A series of hands-on workshops and outings guide residents in enjoying their local resources through the arts and sciences.
NEST was created by Joanna Cornell as the basis for her dissertation work at George Mason University. The Northern Virginia Soil and Water Conservation District administers the NEST Program, in partnership with many organizations and agencies. The NEST Program was held in 2006 and is offered in Spring 2008.

ANSWERS TO COMMON QUESTIONS
When does NEST begin?
The official start of NEST is in early April. You can begin signing up and participating in activities as soon as you wish.
How do I participate in NEST?
You choose to complete one program in each of the six categories. They are listed at: http://www.exploreyournest.org/activities.html
What is the cost of NEST?
The NEST Program is free. What that means is that you do not have to pay to be a participant and I have worked hard to provide free options within all the categories. But you will see fees associated with many programs. The fees are low. It is your choice if you want to participate in a free activity or one that costs $10. Any fees go to support this type of programming.
Can I just show up for any program?
NO! Please make sure to RSVP to the contact information provided for each activity.
Can my kids participate?
Most of the listed activities are open to anyone. If there is an age limit, it will be stated clearly. But NEST is an adult program. What that means is that I encourage adults to participate without their children - to focus on your own learning. I know, that's hard to do as a parent, but sometimes it is important to take some time to focus on yourself.
Can I invite my friends?
Yes, please let them all know about NEST. You can almost always bring along a friend. A few options will be limited to NEST participants only - that will be noted on the website.
Why do you need my mailing address?
I will only send information via email. Please make sure that I am added to your allowed list, so that my emails do not end up in your spam folder. I requested your mailing address so that I can make sure that I have enough programs close to where our particiapnts live. I will not share your email or your mailing address.
How do I become a "NEST alumni"?
You complete an activity in each category. You will receive a certificate for completing the program.
Will anyone track my activities?
There is an honor system here. No one will take attendance. I hope that our software will be ready in time and that system will help you keep track online.
Are all the options online yet?
Nope. NEST is a dynamic program. As more people find out about it, more options are being added. Many of our partners are still finalizing details. Check the website for the most updated information.
Is this still part of a study?
No, NEST 2008 is not part of any research. NEST 2006 was the basis for my PhD research.
Can I help with the growth of the program?
Yes! You can invite your friends and neighbors to participate. I'm happy to send you an email that you can forward. My vision is to have a program that serves as an easy first step to get involved in local art and science programs in our community. I am open to all ideas about potential partners. Do you know an organization that should be added? Do you know any creative teachers who could offer some outdoor arts programs? If so, I'd love to hear your ideas. Email me at joanna@exploreyournest.org
Who is behind the scenes of NEST?
The program was originally created by Joanna Cornell. A wide range of volunteers and staff from many organizations made NEST 2006 possible. Again, a range of volunteers and staff from many organizations are behind NEST 2008. Stacey Evers and Jessie Steiger are NEST 2006 alumni and now volunteering their time with NEST 2008. A range of local and regional environmental organizations and agencies support the NEST program by providing in-kind support, assistance with promotion, or funding. A number of companies partner with NEST.
